Output Devices

Output Devices are hardware that can display information.

There are two types of output:

Hard copy - Hard copy is printed on paper or other permanent media.

Soft Copy - Soft copy is on a screen or displayed some other nonpermanent way.

There are many output devices like monitors, printers, speakers,

 

Monitors

There are different types of monitors

CRT - Cathode Ray Tube

Monitors that use and old vacuum tube technology similar to televisions.

LCD - Liquid Crystal Display

Also known as flat screen is based on new technology. LCD screens have several advantages, and disadvantages, if you compare them to a CRT monitor. They use less energy, they are smaller, and lighter, no harmful radiation, they reduce eye strain, but LCD monitors are more expensive.

Printers

There are several types of printers

  • Laser printer- high quality and speed

  • Inkjet- medium quality and speed

Inkjet printer

  • Dot Matrix printers- slow, but can print long sheets of papers, like records.

Dot matrix printer

  • Plotters- print large drawings, such as banners, and architecture plans.

Quality is measured in DPI (Dots per Inch) more dots per inch, the better quality. Speed is measured in pages per minute.

 

Speakers

Speakers are output devices that plug into a sound card.

They can come in all different styles, sizes, (and prices)
